LLANELLI Music Shop and School of Music and Drama has been a beacon for musical and artistic education in South Wales for over 15 years. Established in 2007, it has grown to become the longest-running music school in Llanelli, offering opportunities for students of all ages and abilities. Nestled in the heart of the town at 16 John Street, the school is a hub of creativity, passion, and community spirit.
“Cultivate creative community,” is a core mantra that drives the school’s mission, aiming to foster a love for the arts across all age groups.
The school provides an extensive range of lessons tailored to individual interests and skill levels. Whether you are a complete beginner, a naturally gifted musician, or someone rediscovering the joy of music, there is something for everyone. Students can learn to play the piano, violin, guitar, bass, ukulele, and drums. Singing lessons are also available as well as acting and accent lessons. The lessons are designed to suit the busiest of schedules, with sessions running throughout the week and on Saturdays, making it convenient for everyone to participate.
Every lesson is crafted to be fun and engaging, with a focus on building confidence and fostering a love for creativity and the arts. One-to-one sessions allow each student to receive individualised attention from highly skilled tutors, all who are fully CRB-checked. This ensures a safe, supportive, and professional environment where students can thrive. Brandon said “We have a number of neurodivergent students, of different ages and abilities. Some of our tutors aim their teaching specifically for neurodivergent students to meet their needs. We also have practice instruments available too, so there’s no need to own one before booking a lesson.”
Brandon and Hollie, the owners, also run the Llanelli Music Shop. The shop provides an array of instruments and accessories. From guitars and drum kits to sheet music and essential supplies, the shop is a one-stop destination for quality musical equipment. “Practice is the key principle. If it will motivate you, buy a real nice instrument. Others need to find a different motivation, like finding an artist you love. Find and follow your passion,” Brandon advises.
Brandon’s connection to the business is personal. He shared, “It’s been a music shop and school for nearly 16 years before we bought the business and kept it going. I was in a band when I was 14 and practised here. I didn’t want to see the only music store in Llanelli close. I was friends with the previous owner, he was retiring, and we asked him if anyone was showing interest. Then it dawned on us that we were interested. We did crowd funding, took out a small business loan, negotiated a payment plan, and dove headfirst into it.”
The school’s ambitions extend beyond its current offerings. “We want to connect and enable people, young and old, so the future of the arts and music in Wales is bright. Covid meant a lot of kids didn’t have music lessons. We intend to grow and expand our premises, and have ambitions to facilitate musical plays, theatre, shows, and to organise live music venues and bands. We would love to be involved in all of that.”
Brandon, Hollie, and many of the school’s tutors and students will be involved in the 2024 Llanelli Christmas Parade, contributing to the event with a live music showcase. This will take place in Stepney Square during the festive celebrations, alongside other local performers and activities. The parade, organised by Ymlaen Llanelli, promises a vibrant community atmosphere with floats and live entertainment. “First thing we had to do was choose a theme for our float. We chose Frozen. There are people who like and people who don’t like Christmas songs. Frozen is a nice middle ground even if we do throw in some classic Christmas songs as well.”

Brandon encourages everyone to embrace their musical passion: “If there is any passion or desire in you, use it, and we will equip you for it. Anyone of any age or ability can book one lesson at a time if needed. Don’t miss it; it’s never too late, or too soon! Jump on any passion you have.”
