£10m more for community energy projects through Welsh Labour Government’s Ynni Cymru

TODAY, the Welsh Labour Government has committed a further £10 million to Ynni Cymru for the next financial year, supporting organisations to develop homegrown smart green energy systems.

Celebrating successes in delivering community green energy projects across Wales, the Welsh Labour Government is continuing to deliver on its promise to transform Wales into a renewable energy powerhouse by putting Welsh communities in the driving seat of our energy future.

The Ynni Cymru scheme currently supports social enterprises, public sector bodies, and small to medium sized enterprises, and is key to growing the community energy sector.

It ensures that the benefits of energy generation are retained locally, promoting community ownership, and empowers people to become renewable energy owners – with the ability to generate, store and control their own clean energy.

Families in Wales are paying the price for Tory failure on energy bills and household budgets have been hit harder by the energy crisis than any major advanced country. And we hear time and time again from Plaid Cymru that they recognise the climate emergency, but refuse to commit o any concrete actions. Today’s announcement from the Welsh Labour Government charts a clear way forward.

First Minister Eluned Morgan said: “Here we have the opportunity to make use of the natural gifts we have as a nation thanks to an accident of geography, as well as investing in our communities.

“If the Conservatives and Plaid Cymru recognise, as we in Welsh Labour do, the opportunities that come alongside this green revolution for the people of Wales, they’ll vote for our Budget.”

Since Eluned Morgan launched Ynni Cymru’s £10 million smart local energy system grant scheme within a month of being appointed as First Minister, the Welsh Labour Government has awarded funding to 32 projects across Wales. This includes 10 in North Wales, 6 in mid Wales, 7 in the south west and 9 projects in  south-east Wales.

With the UK Government setting up Great British Energy, the Welsh Labour Government is harnessing the power in partnership of two Labour Governments working together to deliver for the people of Wales.
