A BODY has been discovered in the River Severn near Welshpool during a search for a missing person, Dyfed-Powys Police have confirmed.
The search operation was launched on Friday afternoon (Aug 9) after a person was reported missing in the area. Dyfed-Powys Police, supported by a coastguard helicopter crew, conducted an extensive search along the River Severn.
In a statement, the police confirmed that a body was recovered at approximately 8pm on Friday. The statement read: “Following a multi-agency search in the River Severn, Welshpool, sadly, we can confirm that a body was recovered at around 8pm.
“Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
“Emergency services remain in the area and ask that members of the public stay away whilst enquiries continue.”
During the search, the road between Lower Leighton Farm and Welshpool Industrial Estate on the B4381 was temporarily closed. A significant emergency services presence, including police officers, fire crews, and ambulances, was observed at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have asked for the public’s cooperation by avoiding the area as they continue their work.
