WALES have unveiled their team to face Ireland in round three of the Six Nations, with interim head coach Matt Sherratt making wholesale changes following the disappointing defeat to Italy.
Sherratt has opted for a significant reshuffle, handing starting roles to Max Llewellyn and Gareth Anscombe, both recently called up to the squad. Llewellyn will partner Ben Thomas in midfield, with Thomas shifting to inside centre and Anscombe slotting in at fly-half.
Meanwhile, Ellis Mee will make his Wales debut on the wing, joining Blair Murray and Tom Rogers in the back three.
Up front, Wales have a completely revamped front row, with Nicky Smith, Elliot Dee, and WillGriff John packing down together at the Principality Stadium. Dafydd Jenkins returns from illness to resume his place in the second row alongside Will Rowlands.
In the back row, Sherratt has opted for two opensides, with Tommy Reffell wearing the number seven jersey and captain Jac Morgan shifting to blindside flanker. Taulupe Faletau completes the forward pack at number eight.
Among the replacements, Joe Roberts and Jarrod Evans feature in a 5-3 bench split.
Sherratt is under no illusions about the scale of the challenge against the reigning champions but is optimistic about the response from his side.
“We’re looking forward to the challenge of facing Ireland. We have spoken this week about being brave, but not reckless, and making sure everyone knows their roles. We also know that keeping our discipline will be huge.”
“Everyone is excited for our first home game of the Six Nations. The atmosphere Wales fans create at Principality Stadium is incredible, and playing at home is something the players really look forward to.”
Ireland, who named their team earlier on Thursday morning, will be captained by Dan Sheehan in the absence of Caelan Doris. Thomas Clarkson earns his first start in the front row, while Jack Boyle is set to make his debut from the bench.
Interim head coach Simon Easterby is well aware of the challenge his side faces in Cardiff.
“Playing Wales in Cardiff is one of the great tests, and we know the challenge that awaits us. With a new coaching set-up in place, Wales will be re-energised and determined to impress in front of a vocal home support.”
“There will also be a huge Irish travelling support which, when added to the closed roof and the great respect and rivalry between the two nations, will add to an electric atmosphere.”
