Ceredigion St David’s Day celebrations ‘full of excitement’

CEREDIGION was full of excitement last week as St David’s Day celebrations went underway. One of the events was the Tregaron St David’s Day celebration which was held on Wednesday, 01 March 2023.

Over 300 people gathered in the Town Hall, including pupils from Ysgol Pontrhydfendigaid, Ysgol Rhoshelyg and Ysgol Henry Richard – a large number of them in Welsh costumes and carrying red dragon flags and flags made especially for the celebration. There was bespoke entertainment with items from the pupils of the three schools together with the local ukulele band, The Pictons.

A dedicated address was given by the Chairman of Tregaron Town Council, Councillor Rhydian Wilson, who said: “It’s fantastic to see the community come together once again after three long years – to celebrate our patron saint.”

The Chairman of the County Council, Councillor Ifan Davies, was also present and said: “This is our day. A day to celebrate not only our patron saint but a day to be proud of our Welshness. It is so important that we keep doing this in order to ensure that the Welsh language continues for the next generation.”

Rhodri Francis, Cered Development Officer, Menter Iaith Ceredigion said: “It has been great to see hundreds of young people from Tregaron enjoying speaking Welsh at a special event to celebrate our language and culture.”

Councillor Catrin M.S Davies, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Culture, added: “After three years of not being able to hold St David’s events safely, it was amazing to see so many concerts, gigs, parades, walks, etc, being organised this year, and each one attracting a large number of people to enjoy celebrating our patron saint day and to do the little things. A large number of the county’s residents speak Welsh daily but for those who are more shy or unsure about the language, this gives them a focus and opportunities to enjoy a local Welsh occasion and practice their Welsh.”

The intention is to make this event part of Tregaron town’s annual events calendar.
