Pembrokeshire developer shares top tips on keeping pets safe this Bonfire Night

THIS BONFIRE Night, leading partnerships developer Lovell Homes is sharing its top tips on how homeowners can keep their pets safe during the fireworks season.

Lovell Homes is providing new homes at its Augustus Grange development in Haverfordwest, which is a beautiful collection of two and three-bedroom homes located off St David’s Road.

Suzie Hewitt, regional sales director at Lovell Homes, said: “At Lovell, we care deeply about the family pets that reside in our homes.

“Although Bonfire Night can be an exciting celebration, for our furry friends it can result in stress and anxiety, so we wanted to share our top tips to help residents make the night a success for both themselves and their animal companions.”

  1. Stay home after dark
Once nightfall hits, stay inside with your pet to keep them safe and calm. For dog owners, it’s best to take your dog for a walk in the daytime before the sun sets, so you don’t have to worry about taking them out when they may already be feeling anxious.
  2. Create a safe haven
Choose a quiet room in your home to transform into a safe space for your pet to settle down in. Make the room extra inviting by filling it with their favourite toys, chews, blanket and bed, and perhaps buy them a brand-new toy to keep them happy and distracted.
  3. Close windows and curtains
To muffle the bangs and booms of fireworks, keep your windows shut and switch on the TV or some music to drown out the noise, especially in your pet’s safe haven. Close your curtains and blinds too and keep all the lights on, so your pet can’t see any bright flashes.
  4. Keep your four-legged friend busy
Don’t leave your pet alone for long periods of time when fireworks may be set off. Keep them company by distracting them with toys and games, but don’t force them to play if they aren’t joining in. Some pets may be more clingy than usual, so will need lots of extra love and affection.
  5. Try to act normal
If you’re on edge and stressed about fireworks, your pet will pick up on your emotions and feel anxious too. Try to stay relaxed and act natural to reassure your pet that they have nothing to worry about.

If you want to enjoy the fireworks, watch them outside rather than through the window and make sure your pet is comfortable before stepping out. If you’re travelling to a local display, invite a friend or family member over to keep your pet company for you.
