A TRIP to the Royal Mint at Llantrisant was recently arranged by Cardigan University of the Third Age, and the trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
The group were impressed with the brand new visitor centre and facilities (shop, cafeteria and exhibitions) and every member of staff was welcoming, helpful and willing to make the trip a great experience.
The tour lasted around 45 minutes, but the group were encouraged to stay and browse the exhibitions at their leisure, which were suitable for all ages. The tour guides at The Royal Mint were patient and open to any questions about the various processes within the mint. Afterwards, many members of the group struck their own coins, most of which served as presents to grandchildren.
The group then moved on to visit the Physic Garden at Cowbridge. Most of the garden was laid out by the Edmondes family in the 18th Century, comprising the Old Hall Gardens. The garden had fallen into a state of decay after being badly neglected in the 20th Century, but the work of a dedicated team of volunteers saw it revived with a wonderful arrangement of medicinal plants and herbs, typical of physic gardens from centuries ago.
Finally, after a brief shopping venture and a cup of tea, the group headed back to Cardigan.
The Cardigan University of the Third Age (U3A) is not an academic institution which award degrees. The U3A offers a wide range of learning, creative and leisure groups for the retired and semi-retired. Anyone who is no longer in full-time employment is eligible to join, and no qualifications are required; simply an interest in the subject.
