THANKS to the generosity of a local resident, Cardigan Castle now has its own defibrillator.

Mrs Mag Williams celebrated her 95th birthday by raising funds for the charity Calonnau Cymru, or Welsh Hearts, who matched her funds of £450 to allow the purchase of the life-saving equipment.

The defibrillator was presented by Mrs Williams and Sharon Owen, Julian Evans and Meinir Lewis of the Welsh Hearts charity to Cardigan Castle’s Facilties Officer Sue Lewis and Cadwgan Secretary Joff Timms last week.

Mrs Williams said: “Thank you to everyone who made my birthday so enjoyable and raised funds for Calonnau Cymru. A big thank you to all.”

The defibrillator will be placed in the 1176 Restaurant, with castle staff and volunteers being trained to use it.

Welsh Hearts regularly hold a host of free training sessions in CPR and the use of defibrillators as part of their Saving Lives in Wales campaign.

Alongside this essential training, Welsh Hearts also provide the public with access to defibrillators, so far delivering 362 units to schools, sports clubs and a variety of other communities across Wales.

Approximately 8000 sudden cardiac arrests occur outside of hospital each year, which have an appalling survival rate of just 3%. However, where a defibrillator is used, the survival rate rockets up to 50%.

By teaching people to use defibrillators, Welsh Hearts hope to drastically improve the chances of those having cardiac arrests where the first few minutes are critical to saving their lives.
