OGI Wales’s homegrown broadband company, have teamed up with Urdd Gobaith Cymru to transform Cardiff’s iconic oval basin into an urban street games village this June.

The Urdd Urban Games, will see Cardiff Bay’s iconic Roald Dahl Plass play host to the likes of wheelchair basketball, break dancing, freestyle BMX, skateboarding and other urban sports – showcasing prominent Welsh and international talents and inspiring the next generation.

As main partner for this innovative event, Ogi will bring its ultrafast broadband – capable of Gigabit speeds – to the oval basin, providing free wifi connectivity to visitors to the iconic Cardiff Bay setting. In addition the full fibre connectivity will enable event organisers to live stream the weekend’s street game competitions, brining the Cardiff event to a global audience.

It’s a first for the two partners – who share a mission to bring people together connecting through participation and technology. Showcasing Ogi’s connectivity during the weekend, visitors will be able to experience the home-grown fibre providers Gigabit capable speeds first hand – checking when they can get the same game changing speeds at home.

Justin Leese, Ogi’s Chief Technology and Operations Officer, said: “The Urdd have been providing innovative opportunities for young people right across Wales for generations and, as we mark their Centenary year, it feels fitting that Ogi partner with the movement to help bring these Urban Games to Cardiff’s iconic bay area.

“The weekend, connected by Ogi, will provide new opportunities for young people to compete as well as learn new skills through free taster sessions, led by internationally renowned stars from the scene. It’s an exciting time for everybody – and we can’t wait!”

“As part of our Centenary celebrations, Urdd Gobaith Cymru is extremely proud to be hosting Wales’s first ever youth Urban Games in Cardiff this year.” said Sian Lewis, the Urdd’s Chief Executive, adding: “Thanks to our partnership with Ogi, we will be providing connectivity across the weekend, making this exciting event accessible to young people and audiences everywhere. We thank Ogi for making this possible.

Together, we hope to inspire the next generation of Urban Games stars.

“As an organisation, we are extremely passionate about offering a wide variety of sporting opportunities for our children and young people. On a weekly basis, over 15,000 young people take part in our 300 sports clubs throughout Wales.”

The Urdd Urban Games, connected by Ogi will take place in and around Roald Dahl Plass (outside the Wales Millennium Centre), in Cardiff Bay from 18 to 19 June, 2022. Free to attend, the weekend will include taster sessions and elite participant competitions with cash prizes.
