THE CHARITY Welsh Hearts Calonnau Cymru, aimed at managing and preventing heart disease in Wales, has teamed up with Dyfed-Powys Police to launch the Community Heartbeat Appeal.

The Appeal is set up to raise funds for a public-access defibrillator to be placed at each of the 25 police stations across the Dyfed-Powys area, as well as one each for the mobile police stations in the four counties.

Inspector Alun Samuel, Neighbourhood Development Officer for Carmarthenshire, said: “Dyfed Powys Police are delighted to be joining forces with Welsh Hearts. The venture of getting defibrillators into communities will benefit and save lives and we really appreciated being part of that.”

Welsh Hearts are encouraging communities across west Wales to get behind the appeal and fundraise to help get a defibrillator for their local police station, which could benefit the entire community in which it will be placed.

Sharon Owen, Charity Director and Founder of Welsh Hearts, said: “It’s shocking that there are 8,000 cardiac arrests outside a hospital each year in Wales. Every second counts when someone has a cardiac arrest and the first couple of minutes are crucial. A defibrillator is able to restart the heart during a cardiac arrest, and can save lives. When used, the survival rate can increase to 50%, but a speedy response is crucial. This is why we’re so pleased to be teaming up with Dyfed-Powys Police to get defibrillators at each of their police stations.”
