From Saturday (Jul 2), lifeguards will start daily safety patrols on three more beaches – Borth, Clarach and Aberystwyth South – in good time for the summer school holiday period.

RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor for Ceredigion, Sam Trevor, who is predicting a busy summer season, is urging beach visitors to ‘Respect the Water‘ and always visit a lifeguarded beach.

Lifeguards have already been on duty on the beaches at Llangrannog and New Quay since May and Tresaith, Aberystwyth North and Aberporth since earlier this month and have been involved in a number of incidents, including rescuing a family and their pet dogs after they were cut off by the tide at New Quay on June 1.

From Saturday (Jul 2) the lifeguard service will be up to its full complement of eight Ceredigion beaches, with lifeguards on duty daily between 10am and 6pm until the end of the season on September 4.

Sam said: “We are coming towards the busiest period of the year on the beaches and our lifeguards will be on hand every day throughout the summer to provide information and advice on safety to visitors.

“We advise people to choose a lifeguarded beach and to always swim between the red and yellow flags.“

Councillor Gareth Lloyd, Ceredigion County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Economic Development and Tourism, said: “Ceredigion’s beaches are looking very inviting at the moment and I’m very pleased that from July 2 onwards, eight of our most popular beaches will be patrolled by lifeguards, thanks to the partnership between the County Council and the RNLI.

“I’m sure that our beaches will be a huge draw for visitors and locals this summer , but in order to make the trip to the beach a safe and enjoyable experience for all, I urge beach users to take note of all advice given by the lifeguards.”

The RNLI operates a lifeguard service on 39 beaches across Wales and more than 220 across the UK. In 2015, the charity’s lifeguards responded to 815 incidents and assisted 901 people on Welsh beaches.
