Storm Darragh: Power cut warnings and preparations

Storm Darragh is forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rain to south and west Wales, bringing the possibility of power cuts and other disruption.
Storm Darragh is forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rain to South Wales, with the potential for power cuts and other disruptions. While the electricity network is built to be resilient, extreme weather can still impact power supplies. Engineers are prepared to work around the clock to restore services quickly if needed.

Roisin Quinn, Director of Field Operations at National Grid Electricity Distribution, said “Our engineers are ready to repair any damage caused by Storm Darragh. Our control centre will operate 24/7 to manage supplies, and our customer contact centre team will be available around the clock to assist customers.

“While our network is highly reliable, we’ve been preparing for winter by carrying out repairs and maintenance in advance.

“If you experience a power cut, call us on 105, and we’ll do everything we can to restore power as quickly as possible. We also encourage customers who need extra help to register for our free Priority Services Register for additional support during a power cut.”

If you see damage to electrical equipment, stay back, do not touch it, and report it immediately by calling 105.
Preparing for a Power Cut

National Grid Electricity Distribution has shared the following tips to help South Wales residents prepare for potential power cuts:
Save the contact number: Call 105 or 0800 6783 105 to report a power cut or get free advice.

•. Keep a battery or solar charger handy: Use it to recharge your smartphone or tablet and stay updated through social media or the online power cut map.
•. Keep your freezer closed: A well-sealed freezer can keep contents frozen for up to 12 hours.
•. Use safe lighting: Have a torch or lantern ready. Avoid using candles or paraffin lights.
•. Protect sensitive electronics: Use surge protector plugs for devices like computers.
•. Prepare for mains-operated stairlifts: Check if your stairlift has a manual release handle to safely return it to ground level in case of a power outage.
