AS THE SUN shone on Bank Holiday Monday (Aug 29), crowds flocked to Pontarddulais Show Ground for the annual Pontarddulais Agricultural and Horticultural Society show, which is currently in its 113th year. The show is held every year on the bank holiday in August.
In the rings of the ground, there were displays from horses, dairy cattle, sheep and pigs. There was a tent showing chickens, hens, geese, cockerels and ducks. Visitors weren’t disappointed with the animals as there were different categories being shown all day, with the first beginning at 8.30am. Farmers had come from across Britain to attend the event.
There were 160 showing classes with 52 section champions. The Supreme Champions of the show were:
- The Thomas Family of Tyreglwys Farm, Llangennech, for Supreme Champion Dairy Cattle section.
- Delyth Jones and Ifor Davies of Llandysul for Supreme Champion in the Beef Cattle section.
- Mrs J Eagle of Penybont was the Supreme Champion in the Sheep category.
- Mr and Mrs G Owens and Son from Llannon were the champions in the Pig section.
- In the Supreme Champion in the Horse or Pony category, Mr David Thomas from Birchgrove won.
- Mr Richard Stafford of Llansamlet won the Best in Show in the Open Dog Show.
There was certainly something there for everyone; for children, there was a funfair in the field with rides including the waltzers, an inflatable slide, trampolines and a fun house. There was also a circus workshop for the children to have a go at different activities. Local businesses and charities that included National Trust and Guide Dogs also attended. The local Conservative association had a stand there for MP Byron Davies and AM Suzy Davies.
The event was buzzing with excitement throughout the day, with crowds walking around the stalls and the tents, or sitting on bales of hay watching the horses.
Later in the afternoon, a dog competition began and the crowds gathered to watch different breeds of dogs being shown to the judges with their owners.
Taking part in the show were Swansea Vintage Engine Club, and there was an array of vintage tractors on display. In the horticultural tent, people had entered their home grown veg and their baking creations to be judged. Children also entered the show with entries for an A4 poster for a travelling company. There were also competitions for art creations, including sewing and woodwork.
President Keith Evan, commented on the day’s event: “We’ve had an outstanding show run by a team of helpers before, on the day, and after. The entries were excellent in number and quality and we are continually looking to change the classes we run in the show to fit in with the needs of our competitors and to encourage new people along to the show.
“The weather helped by playing the part this year and helped to make a good day for all visitors and competitors to the show. We are always looking to the future and it was a pleasure to see so many children and young people competing at the show.” He also wished the incoming president of the show, Mr Dewi Thomas of Llwynfodda Farm, Llangennech, all the best in his role.
