Tragedy strikes Cardiff Half Marathon as runner dies

A runner participating in the Cardiff Half Marathon has tragically died after collapsing at the finish line. The event’s organisers, Run 4 Wales, expressed their “deep regret” in confirming the death of one of this year’s participants.

On Sunday morning, more than 29,000 runners took to the streets of the capital for the annual race. Following the incident, a spokeswoman for Run 4 Wales stated that the runner received immediate medical attention from the emergency team stationed at the finish line. Despite their swift response, the participant was later pronounced dead at the University Hospital of Wales.

A spokesman for Run 4 Wales remarked, “This is a terrible tragedy and our deepest sympathies go out to the runner’s family. In respect for the participant’s family at this difficult time, no further details will be released.”

This unfortunate event is not the first of its kind at the Cardiff Half Marathon, as there have been three previous deaths associated with the race. In 2019, 35-year-old Nicholas Beckley collapsed and died shortly after finishing the event. The year before, two runners, Ben McDonald, 25, from Cardiff, and 32-year-old Dean Fletcher from Exeter, both went into cardiac arrest and collapsed just minutes apart after crossing the finish line. A coroner’s investigation later ruled that both had died from natural causes.
