On the fast track to success: Students at Ysgol Tycroes

SCHOOL children at Tycroes School have been crowned the UK National Champions in the F1 Schools Challenge for the third time in four years. The Year Six team, who called themselves ‘Emoji’, were guided by teacher Mr Robert Randel and teaching assistant, Mrs Natalie Leyshon.

The F1 Schools Challenge allows students to develop a range of skills in a range of subjects that include science, technology, engineering, design and mathematics. It also allows students to build on presentation and team-working skills. The project involves students in designing, manufacturing and racing the fastest car possible in both 2D and 3D format.

Headteacher, Mr Elfed Wood, said: “Not only has this been a huge success story this year, but this is the third time in four years that Ysgol Tycroes has been crowned UK National Champions.”

Councillor Gareth Jones, who is Executive Board Member for Education commented on the teams’ success: “Congratulations to Ysgol Tycroes pupils and staff for this excellent achievement.

“There is fierce and strong competition in this challenge from schools across the UK, so to win it three times in four years is a remarkable achievement. Well done to all, and keep up the good work!”

Along with becoming the National champions, the team also received an award for best-engineered car, and for the fourth year in a row, the school achieved the fastest car award.
