LAWRENNY YACHT CLUB was founded in 1971 and has continued to thrive with both local membership and many members living over 100 miles away.
The club is quite unique in that it covers a wide range of water borne activities which include the cruising/racing section, the very active power boat section, dinghy sailing, fishing competitions and more recently, kayaking. The club has an impressive range of trophies for its events.
The dinghy sailing section is a relatively new addition. Thanks to various grant funders and sponsors the club is fortunate enough to have a fleet of five Topper dinghies and a safety boat, and the benefit of several members trained to safety boat operator and instructor level in both power and sail. The club is very fortunate having the Lawrenny Arms as an unofficial clubhouse where its social events are held.
The club has a strong and active committee and a full programme of events has already been drawn up for the coming season. The first event this season is the Blues Buster, which is an annual family event held in the Lawrenny Arms, and is designed to drive off the blues of the winter months. It is a social event with pool, darts, dominoes and a quiz and meals will be available.
Some,WW of the other main social events are ‘Chase the bunny’ on Easter Sunday, an event for the children, the ever popular Summer Ball, Summer solstice party, Halloween party, and Christmas party.
The cruiser sailing side has a points series and there are other races such as single handed, ladies race, and down river race. The regatta is on June 7 and there will also be a fete, when profits from the stalls go to the RNLI. In the evening there will be a cider festival at the Lawrenny Arms.
The power side of the club organises events such as a cruise in company to the islands, tender trips to local areas, exploring the creeks by kayak, a club away day to Watwick and the very popular River Carnival.
This is an event for all shapes and sizes of craft, which are taken up to Cresswell Quay on a suitably high evening tide. Many are in fancy dress, and prizes are awarded for the best. This is also good spectator sport and draws a good crowd. The club keeps its membership fees as low as possible. Family membership is £25 (£20 if paid before May 1) and single membership is £20 (£15 if paid before May 1). New members are most welcome.
