EMERGENCY services are maintaining a strong presence in Abergavenny town center following a major fire that erupted on Sunday evening (Nov 10). As of Tuesday (Nov 12), cordons remain in place due to structural concerns and the risk of further building collapse.
The blaze, reported around 8:35pm on Frogmore Street near The Magic Cottage Charity Shop, caused extensive disruption but fortunately led to no injuries. Key roads, including Frogmore Street, Baker Street, and Princes Street, remain closed as authorities assess the safety of nearby buildings.
Emergency response and road closures
The fire drew an extensive emergency response, with over 100 firefighters tackling the flames at the height of the incident. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service deployed 14 engines, four water bowsers, two aerial appliances, and a high-volume pump. Fire crews from Mid and West Wales, Hereford and Worcester, and Gloucester assisted in controlling the blaze.
Three households were evacuated, with Abergavenny Leisure Centre set up as a temporary shelter. Local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area.
The fire caused significant damage to The Magic Cottage Charity Shop building, resulting in the collapse of its upper floors and roof. Firefighters successfully contained the fire, preventing further spread to adjacent properties. Safety inspections of affected structures are ongoing, and officials are reassessing cordons with the aim of reopening roads as soon as it is safe.
