Enhanced cleaning is workers’ top priority

  • Poll of office workers finds that 76% want enhanced cleaning measures when they return to their usual place of work
  • Seven in ten want better ventilation, while six in ten want social distancing
  • CDC research has shown that chance of catching coronavirus from a single infected surface is less than 1 in 10,000

New research has revealed that enhanced cleaning measures are workers’ top priority when they return to their usual place of work, despite evidence showing that coronavirus is primarily an airborne disease.
A study by heating experts Boiler Central found ONS data showing that 76% of people wanted hygiene to be a top priority when they return to work – the most selected option in the list.

Second most popular was “well ventilated office spaces”, which 70% of people want to see, while in third was “limits on the number of people in the building”, with 65%.

The public preference for cleaning surfaces to prevent the spread of Covid-19 comes despite clear evidence that the disease is primarily airborne, with measures such as ventilation likely to be more effective at mitigating transmission.

Research from America’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that “each contact with a contaminated surface has less than a 1 in 10,000 chance of causing an infection”.
The survey reveals that 60% of workers want social distancing when they return to a workplace, while 43% think regular testing should be implemented, and four in ten favour a vaccine requirement.
The least popular options were “limits on the number of people in the building”, which 30% of people wanted, while the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) received just 28%.
