A FORMER quarry near Newport will be transformed into a luxury holiday lodge park after being purchased by the Actually Group, a UK hospitality and leisure developer.
With a price tag of £1.5m, the sale of Penrhos Quarry in Caerleon, Usk Valley, completed on 14th February 2022. It was acquired by the Actually Group, which specialises in low-carbon and environmentally sensitive holiday developments.
The 35-acre site sits on the banks of Afon Lwyd, in the historic town of Caerleon, five miles northeast of Newport. The town sits on the new National Cycle Route 88, which follows a traffic-free riverside trail to Newport City Centre.
It’s the ideal location for exploring south-east Wales, equally well placed for exploring the cityscapes of Cardiff – just 20 minutes away – as it is for the beautiful landscapes of the Vale of Usk, the Forest of Dean, the Black Mountains, the Wye Valley – which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Caerleon itself is an attractive town, packed full of history, from its Roman origins – Caerleon was home to one of only three permanent military fortresses in Roman Britain – to its association with Arthurian legend. The town is home to a Roman amphitheatre and baths museum.
The site was sold with planning permission for four holiday lodges, 24 holiday pods, improved access, parking facilities, a maintenance building, and an administration office. The Actually Group says it will now invest £3m to transform it into an upmarket holiday lodge destination, and work will get underway in the coming months. The site will welcome its first guests in late summer / early autumn 2022.
Andy Sutton, CEO of the Actually Group, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the Penrhos Quarry site to the Actually Group portfolio, and we look forward to creating a sustainable site which will complement its beautiful natural setting and inspire more visitors to come and explore this uniquely beautiful part of Wales.”
Actually Group recently acquired Preseli Lodges and Garden Rooms, one of the UK’s leading lodge manufacturers, based in Whitland, Pembrokeshire. The manufacturer, which has re-branded as Actually Lodges since it was purchased by the Actually Group, will supply the ultra-low-carbon sustainable luxury lodges and pods for the Penrhos Quarry development.
