AN INSPIRATIONAL Conwy man whose life was saved by the Wales Air Ambulance medics has raised £1,000 for the Charity as a thank you.
In 2012 Daniel Gahan was involved in a car crash which resulted in him breaking 15 bones – including his neck and undergoing heart surgery. Daniel was flown from Bangor Hospital to the University Hospital Stoke by the Wales Air Ambulance.
Since his accident Daniel, 26, has acquired a lifelong brain injury and suffers from daily pain.
Despite the daily struggles that Daniel still faces he set himself the challenge of running the Snowdon Half Marathon just six months after he started running. Daniel set himself the challenge to complete a half marathon to lose weight and has raised an incredible 5 stone in less than a year.
Reflecting on his achievement a delighted Daniel, said: “To raise £1,005 is good, it is excellent to have raised that amount of money for the Wales Air Ambulance who saved my life. I did it as a thank you to them for saving my life, whilst keeping fit.
“The half marathon was hard work, especially with all the aches and pains I get. It was tough! I am proud of completing the half marathon because not many people survive what I went through.”
Wales Air Ambulance offers advanced critical care and is often described as a ‘Flying ED’.
The on-board consultants and critical care practitioners are highly skilled and carry some of the most pioneering medical equipment in the world. They can deliver blood transfusions, administer anaesthesia, and undertake emergency operations at the scene of the incident, before flying the patient directly to specialist care.
Now operational 24/7, the Charity needs to raise £8 million every year to keep the helicopters flying.
This is the first fundraiser that Daniel has ever done, and he would like to thank his family and friends for their support in donating to the good cause and for their support since his accident.
Daniel visited the Charity’s Caernarfon base where he presented the Wales Air Ambulance’s community fundraiser, Alwyn Jones with a cheque of £1,005.
Alwyn Jones said: “A huge congratulations to Daniel for not only raising over £1,000 for our lifesaving Charity but for signing himself by for a half marathon after everything he has been through. Daniel has first-hand experience of the remarkable work that our medics do. Daniel is an inspiration, despite everything that he has been through he wanted to do something for someone else and he should be immensely proud of himself. His donation will help us be there for the people of Wales, just like Daniel, when they need us most. Also, thank you to everyone who has supported Daniel in his fundraising for the Wales Air Ambulance. Da iawn, pawb.”
