Military charity calls on South Wales organisations to support blind veterans in the act of Remembrance

Military charity Blind Veterans UK is calling on South Wales organisations to sponsor a wreath and help ensure veterans can take part in local Remembrance Sunday commemorations this November.

Remembrance is a special time for veterans, their families and those in active service. It’s a time to come together to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex Service men and women, is looking for local groups, businesses and organisations who can sponsor a wreath.

Sponsorship will also be used to ensure blind veterans continue to receive the vital support, rehabilitation and equipment that they need.

Colin Williamson, blind veteran and President of Blind Veterans UK, said: “On Remembrance Sunday we support our veterans in making the journey to march past the Cenotaph in London but many chose to mark this important occasion by taking part in events in their local area surrounded by loved ones and fellow local veterans.

“We provide wreaths to these veterans so they too can play an active part in Remembrance.”

Tom Owen and Sons Funeral Directors were the first to join the campaign, sponsoring a wreath to be laid in North Wales.

Kelly Owen said: “As a family business that began in the 1930s, we’ve helped families who have lost loved ones in the Second World War and in the line of duty in conflicts throughout the world since. Each year we lay our own wreath but this year we’re immensely proud to be additionally helping a blind veteran in our local area to mark this important occasion.”

Blind Veterans UK is looking for sponsorship wreaths to be laid by their veterans at the Ynysangharad Memorial Park, Ammanford Park Gates Memorial and the Tredegar Cenotaph. Organisations sponsoring a wreath will have their name, logo and website link added to Blind Veterans UK’s sponsor page. A logo or organisation name will also be added to the wreath to show their support for veterans in their community. Applications for sponsorship close on Friday 14 October. Visit the charity’s website for more information: blindveterans.org.uk/sponsorawreath

Blind Veterans UK supports thousands of blind veterans across the country, but knows there are many thousands more who still need its support to rebuild their lives after sight loss.
