Charlie Brooker criticises AI tool’s attempt to generate new Black Mirror episode

RENOWNED British writer and creator of the dystopian anthology series Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker, has revealed his experience using an AI tool, ChatGPT, to generate a new episode for the show. However, Brooker expressed disappointment with the results, describing them as “s***” and lacking any real originality.

Brooker’s revelation comes just ahead of the highly anticipated release of the sixth series of Black Mirror on Netflix, scheduled for June 15. The upcoming season will feature notable actors such as Aaron Paul, Michael Cera, Salma Hayek Pinault, Himesh Patel, and Rob Delaney.

Speaking to Empire Magazine in an interview preceding the series’ premiere, Brooker shared his experimentation with ChatGPT, stating, “I’ve toyed around with ChatGPT a bit. The first thing I did was type ‘generate Black Mirror episode,’ and it comes up with something that, at first glance, reads plausibly, but on second glance, is s***.”

Brooker further explained that the AI tool merely compiled synopses from existing Black Mirror episodes and merged them together, lacking genuine originality. He expressed his belief that the show should continue to surprise both audiences and himself with entirely distinct stories, emphasizing the importance of reinvention.

As the executive producer of Black Mirror, Brooker collaborates with Jessica Rhoades, Annabel Jones, and Bisha K Ali. In a previous interview on Netflix’s Tudum platform, Brooker highlighted the series’ commitment to defying categorization and reinventing itself continually.

Black Mirror, known for its dystopian and often darkly comedic portrayal of modern society and its relationship with technology, initially premiered on Channel 4 in 2011. Since 2016, the series has been exclusively available on the streaming giant Netflix.

Fans eager to delve into Charlie Brooker’s thoughts on Black Mirror and AI can look forward to the upcoming July 2023 issue of Empire Magazine, which will feature the full interview. The magazine goes on sale on June 8, providing readers with a comprehensive insight into Brooker’s creative process and the evolution of the show.

The AI-generated episode may have fallen short of Brooker’s expectations, but viewers are eagerly anticipating the sixth series of Black Mirror, hopeful for more thought-provoking and innovative stories that have become synonymous with the acclaimed series.
