AN inquest into the tragic death of a five-year-old boy in Bridgend has heard how his death may have been “violent or unnatural”.
Logan Mwangi’s body was found in the River Ogmore on July 31 after he was reported missing from his home.
The inquest heard how Logan had been found deceased in the river and had sustained multiple injuries including a broken collarbone, internal head injury and a torn liver.
One person stands accused of the childs murder, while two others have been charged with perverting the course of justice.
The inquest was opened and adjourned due to the fact that there is an impending criminal court case and a trial date for the accused has been set for January 31, 2022.
39-year-old John Cole, who was Logans stepfather has been charged with his murder.
The child’s mother, Angharad Williamson, 30, has been charged with perverting the course of justice.
A third defendant, a youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has also been charged with perverting the course of justice.
The inquest heard that Logan was formally identified by his grandmother Claire Williamson.
A post-mortem was conducted on August 2, but the official cause of death is still under investigation.
Rachel Knight, assistant coroner said: “I am satisfied it’s necessary to open an inquest as there is reason to expect his death may be violent or unnatural.
“I have seen correspondence from the CPS in this case which says people have appeared in criminal court and a trial date has been set.”
Logan’s mother and stepfather were remanded into custody after appearing at Newport Crown Court on August 14.
The youth has been remanded into the custody of the local authority.
Ms Knight sent her condolences to the family.
The inquest was adjourned until the conclusion of the criminal case.
