SEVERAL roads in Swansea city centre were closed off on Friday morning after a suspicious suitcase was found outside the city’s main police station. The alarm was raised at around 7:25am, prompting South Wales Police to cordon off streets surrounding Grove Place and Mount Pleasant while specialist officers examined the package.
The suitcase, an old-fashioned briefcase with New York street names printed on its cream exterior, a brown leather handle, and gold-coloured fixings, was left near the entrance of Swansea Central Police Station. Witnesses reported that the case was left open on the ground, with what appeared to be various weapons visible inside.
The discovery caused significant disruption in the area, with buses being diverted and people unable to access nearby homes and businesses. There were also reports of congestion during the busy rush hour period while the cordon remained in place.
South Wales Police later confirmed that the suitcase contained “replica firearms and lighters” and posed no threat to public safety. A police spokeswoman said: “We thank everyone for their patience while the incident was resolved.”
The roads were reopened and the cordon lifted shortly before 9:45am, once the package had been declared safe. Officers remained on the scene for further inquiries.
In an earlier statement, the force had said: “South Wales Police was made aware of a suspicious package at Swansea Central Police Station just after 7:25am this morning. Emergency services responded and a cordon was put in place in surrounding streets as a precaution.”
The incident caused disruption, but thanks to the swift actions of the emergency services, the situation was resolved without any harm.
