Nine other locations around the UK will also be hosting the competition and, once all ten heats have been completed, there will be a grand final on June 17 – 18 at Edinburgh College. The winner of the Bridgend College heat – along with the other regional winners and the highest placed overall regional runner up – will automatically qualify for a place in the national final. After completing a challenging two-day work piece, the ‘Student Decorator of the Year’ will be selected from the ten students.

Now entering its eighth year, the competition is open to all full – or parttime students on a recognised NVQ or SVQ level two or three painting and decorating course. Competitors will be asked to showcase their skills with a series of practical applications, comprising various elements of painting and decorating, covering wallpapering, stenciling, waterborne glosses, and special effects. Bridgend College Painting and Decorating tutor Simon Austin, said: “We are delighted to again be hosting such a prominent event at our purpose-built Construction Academy.

Our students are always keen to take part, and it’s something that we feel that they benefit hugely from. It’s fantastic to be part of a competition which brings together students from different regions to experience working towards timescales and quality standards within a competitive yet friendly atmosphere.” Prizes will include £1,000 cash for the winner, alongside a generous selection of products and tools from supplier sponsors. Heat winners will collect £100 worth of Dulux Decorator Centre vouchers and receive a certificate and a goody bag full of decorating materials donated by the company’s suppliers.
