Emergency services respond to major incident at Cardiff’s Mermaid Quay

EMERGENCY SERVICES were called to Mermaid Quay this evening (Nov 12) in response to a serious incident, prompting police and fire crews to establish a cordon and advise the public to avoid the area.

According to South Wales Police, officers received reports of the incident around 8:20pm, with the fire service arriving shortly thereafter. South Wales Police posted on social media, urging: “Please avoid the area. More detail will follow as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that specialist officers and equipment had been deployed to the scene, with the first response unit arriving at approximately 8:38pm. The incident remains active, and authorities have expanded the cordon around Las Iguanas restaurant and surrounding premises, including Nando’s and The Botanist.

By 11:10pm, much of the emergency presence had left, with only a few police officers remaining to oversee the now-lifted cordon. Earlier, people in Hazmat suits were observed exiting Las Iguanas, and emergency personnel had been seen removing equipment from the premises. South Wales Police later clarified that the incident was not related to a bomb scare, though details on the nature of the emergency remain undisclosed.

The scene around Mermaid Quay remained busy, with theatre-goers exiting a nearby performance of Wicked, questioning the situation, as firefighters and police worked to secure the area.

The Herald will provide further updates as information becomes available.
