End of life charity planting the seed for biggest fundraising campaign

THE BULBS may only have just gone in the ground, but the UK’s leading end of life charity, Marie Curie, is urging people across Wales to think about daffodils already, as they launch their biggest fundraising campaign of the year.

Marie Curie Cymru will be encouraging individuals, groups, schools and businesses to hold their own Daffodil Day in 2023, as part of the Great Daffodil Appeal.

Suggestions include hosting bake sales, setting yourself a challenge like the charity’s Step into Spring 10k steps, or hosting a Dinner Down Memory lane dinner party. Whatever fundraising challenge works for you.

The charity will be hosting its Daffodil Day on St David’s Day, March 1, but says it’s up to those taking part when – and how – they want to mark the day throughout February and March next year.

Over the last three decades, the Great Daffodil Appeal has raised millions to support the charity care for dying people, and their loved ones, in the charity’s Cardiff and the Vale Hospice in Penarth, and in their own homes across Wales. Supporters would sign up to take part in supermarket collections, or to be collection box coordinators, dropping boxes of daffodils in shops and pubs in their local community.

The collections will still be available for people to sign up to if they wish – with people able to host a whole day with their family and friends if they wish – but the new addition to the campaign will see people able to mark a day of their choosing in their own way, and for their own reasons.

Sam Clements, Marie Curie Cymru’s Head of Quality and Clinical Practice and Daffodil Day Ambassador, said: “Both personally and professionally I have seen first-hand the very real difference the right care can make to a person and to their loved ones.

“Marie Curie’s daffodil unites us in our wish for better end of life care for all and that’s why for this year’s Great Daffodil Appeal, we are encouraging people across Wales to hold their own Daffodil Day to celebrate or remember what their daffodil means to them.

“Whether in memory of a loved one lost, in support of someone needing care or to celebrate St David’s Day, we encourage you to hold your Daffodil Day, your way.”

Sara Bass, Head of Fundraising for Marie Curie Cymru, said: “By supporting the Marie Curie Cymru Daffodil Day, you’ll be making a real difference to people across Wales facing dying, death and bereavement. You will also be helping with our research and policy change, improving end of life care for all.”
