WELSH opera singer and broadcaster Wynne Evans has expressed his frustration over “lies” reported about him during his time on Strictly Come Dancing. Speaking on BBC Radio Wales shortly after his elimination, Evans shared his disappointment but also reflected on the joy of participating in the popular show.
Evans became the latest celebrity to leave the competition following a dazzling week in Blackpool’s iconic Tower Ballroom. He and his professional dance partner Katya Jones performed a Charleston on Saturday night, earning a score of 31 out of 40. Despite their lively performance, the pair found themselves in the bottom two for the second consecutive week, lacking the public support needed to progress further.
Montell Douglas, who scored 35 earlier in the evening, also landed in the dance-off. After reprising her salsa with partner Johannes Radebe, all four judges unanimously chose to save the Olympian-turned-Gladiator, confirming Wynne and Katya’s departure.
Speaking after his elimination, Wynne described his Strictly journey as “amazing and incredible”. Reflecting on his time in the competition, he said: “Week nine, what an experience. I’m so grateful to have been part of the show, and I’ve grown so much as a person.” He also praised his professional partner, Katya, calling her “incredible” and highlighting the positive influence she had on him during the series.
Expressing his gratitude for the Strictly community, he added: “The Strictly family are perfect in every way.” Fans were similarly effusive, with one saying: “You were all just wonderful. Thank you for your entertainment and enthusiastic presentation. You are all winners at this stage.” Another wrote: “Sorry to see you go, Wynne. You did very well to get to Blackpool.”
However, Wynne’s Strictly experience was not without controversy. During the fourth live show, a moment involving Wynne and Katya raised concerns among viewers when he placed his arm around her, only for her to knock it away and reject a high five. Social media lit up with speculation, prompting the pair to clarify the incident via Instagram, describing it as an inside joke.
Speaking candidly on Monday, Wynne criticised some of the media coverage, saying: “I am astounded that people are allowed to write, for want of a better word, lies without any foundation. It’s disappointing to see that side of life.” Despite this, he emphasised his resilience, saying: “The people that know me, know me. I think I am a much stronger person coming out of it.”
