Indigo Premiership: Wins for Newport and Merthyr

NEWPORT and Merthyr both earned victories on Saturday (Mar 4) as they step up their quest for a place in the play-offs at the end of the season.

Newport’s win keeps them nine points behind fourth placed Ebbw Vale with games in hand while Merthyr’s win strengthens their third placed position.

There were also wins for Ebbw Vale and Bridgend on Saturday.

Newport earned a 17-10 win over Aberavon with Henry Palmer, Ioan Davies and Cameron Davies all scoring tries for the visitors.

Ebbw Vale earned a 24-31 win away at Swansea, a win which sees them replace Aberavon in the top four. Carrick McDonough, Ethan Phillips, Matthew Flanagan and Rhys Francis all scored for the Vale as they earned a bonus point win.

Merthyr earned a 41-22 win away at Carmarthen Quins on Saturday as they stayed third in the table.

Bridgend were also victorious on Saturday as they beat RGC 40-25, a win which moves them 12 points behind the North Wales side.

Newport had been due to host Carmarthen Quins tonight (Mar 8) but that game has been postponed.

There is one game scheduled for Thursday, March 9, and it sees Cardiff hosting Bridgend, kick off 7:30pm.

On Friday, March 10, Ebbw Vale take on Merthyr in another crucial game and Llandovery host Aberavon. Both those games kick off at 7:30pm.

There is also one game set for Saturday, March 11, which sees RGC hosting Pontypridd, kick off at 12:30pm.
