Josie Gibson confirmed as replacement for Phillip Schofield on This Morning

AFTER a week of speculation, it has been officially announced that Josie Gibson will be taking over as the replacement for Phillip Schofield on ITV’s flagship show, This Morning. The news comes following Phillip’s abrupt exit from the show, during which he admitted to having an affair with a younger colleague.

Phillip Schofield, who had been a host on This Morning for an impressive 21 years, shocked fans and colleagues alike when he confessed to the affair just a week after leaving the show. His talent agency, YMU, dropped him as a client following the revelation, and he decided to step down from ITV entirely, including relinquishing his role as the host of the upcoming British Soap Awards.

ITV executives were reportedly taken aback by the news, with senior staff accusing Schofield of dishonesty at every level. Meanwhile, Holly Willoughby, Schofield’s former co-host, had taken a two-week break from the show, spending time with her family on a holiday in Portugal. During her absence, Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary stepped in to fill her place on the magazine-style program.

On Friday, Alison and Dermot confirmed that Holly Willoughby would be returning to This Morning on Monday, and joining her as the new co-host would be Josie Gibson, the winner of Big Brother in 2010. Josie has previously appeared as a guest co-host on the show and is known for her sunny outlook and ability to provide light relief.

Holly had expressed her hurt over Phillip’s admission of the affair, revealing her disappointment in an Instagram post. She wrote, “It’s taken time to process yesterday’s news. When reports of this relationship first surfaced, I asked Phil directly if this was true and was told it was not. It’s been very hurtful to now find out that this was a lie.”

Phillip Schofield, in response to allegations of a “toxic” atmosphere on the set of This Morning, vehemently denied any toxicity and criticized those who had spoken out against him or the show. In an Instagram post, he stated, “This Morning IS the best show to work on, with the best people. In all the years I worked there, there was no toxicity.”

These comments did not sit well with former co-star Eamonn Holmes, who engaged in a bitter war of words with Schofield. Holmes, who left This Morning alongside Ruth Langsford in 2021, made a series of accusations against Schofield and ITV in an interview with GB News’ Dan Wootton. Among his claims were allegations that Holly and Phil had lied about excuses they made and insinuations that Holly had been “using” Alison Hammond.

Phillip Schofield has since addressed these allegations in a series of TV interviews, including with the BBC and The Sun. He has discussed his affair, his wife’s reaction, and his final text message to Holly.

The appointment of Josie Gibson as the replacement for Phillip Schofield on This Morning will undoubtedly bring a fresh dynamic to the popular show. Viewers will be eagerly tuning in on Monday to see how the new hosting duo of Holly Willoughby and Josie Gibson will fare and whether they can continue the show’s success amidst the recent controversies.
