Place where SuperTed and Fireman Sam were born turns 40

All these famous faces have something in common: Alex Jones, Fireman Sam, Rhys Ifans, Duffy, Ioan Gruffudd, Gethin Jones, and SuperTed.

As well as being Welsh, they all came off the production line of a TV station not widely known around the world.

Sianel Pedwar Cymru (S4C), or Channel Four Wales in Welsh, initially went on the air on November 1, 1982.

Even though it has been warned that it faces significant problems, the channel is already 40 years old.

Alex Jones, who hails from Ammanford, Carmarthenshire and now hosts The One Show, formerly hosted several children’s programmes including S4C’s singing programme Cân I Gymru (A Song for Wales).

On November 1, 1987, Sam Tan, later known as Fireman Sam, made his debut on S4C.

Originally airing on S4C on its premiere date of November 1, 1982, SuperTed has since been sold to a total of 128 nations throughout the world and dubbed into 32 languages.

Spider-Man, Notting Hill, and more recently, House of the Dragon star Rhys Ifans, from Ruthin, Denbighshire, has presented several television programmes and starred in dramas on S4C.

After starring in Notting Hill in 1999, he provided the voiceover for Sali Mali, a children’s animated series on S4C that aired in 2000.

Cardiff native and Titanic and Hornblower actor Ioan Gruffudd appeared in the BBC’s longest-running soap opera, Pobol Y Cwm, from 1987 until 1994.

Gethin Jones, born in Cardiff, was a children’s host on S4C before becoming famous as the host of Blue Peter and now Morning Live on BBC One.

Musician Duffy, a native of Bangor, Gwynedd, had her first TV appearance in 2004 on S4C’s talent programme Wawffactor, where she placed second.
