FIRST MINISTER Mark Drakeford has spoke on the radio on Sunday (Mar 7) and announced that the ban on all but essential travel could be eased in Wales very soon.
Speaking on BBC Radio Wales’ Sunday Supplement programme he said: “In Wales we are trying to approach the whole business [of easing restrictions] carefully, cautiously and step by step
“We’re not doing too many things at once so that we can monitor the impact of changes.
“We can then restore more freedoms to people and to the economy once we are confident it’s safe to do so.”
“I said two weeks ago at the last review that I hoped this will be the last three weeks of the stay at home regulation. So, that is what we will be trying to make happen on Friday of this week.
“We will be looking carefully at whether an intermediate period of stay local. I think people are used to that.
“We had a period of that last year in Wales; and that would be a first step on a journey [to more freedoms].”
Mr Drakeford said that an easing of the current regulations could be announced at the Friday March 12 briefing.
Andrew RT Davies MS, the Conservative Leader in the Senedd, has repeated his call for the Welsh Labour Government to publish a clear roadmap to recovery and easing restrictions.
Davies said: “Welsh Conservatives have been clear that we want this to be the last lockdown and have supported measures to ensure that is the case.
“We’ve made great strides in recent months bearing down on the virus and with our exceptional vaccination programme.
“However, now is time for a roadmap out of lockdown. Where the data allows, restrictions should be sensibly eased, and this is especially important for some of our most vulnerable and most isolated citizens, and for our struggling economy.
“We’re now entering a different era of the pandemic, and I pay tribute to our fantastic NHS staff and others who have got us to this point, a point where we can look to a better future.
“Wales is crying out for a clear path forward and an end to the isolation so many have experienced and are still are experiencing. This week, Labour ministers should step up and provide a roadmap to recovery for Welsh families, workers and businesses.”
