Lifting of covid restrictions in Wales unlikely as cases rise

Mark Drakeford briefing

WALES is unlikely to see anymore covid restrictions lifted on Friday, June 18, as concerns over the rise in the number of cases of the delta variant remain.

First Minister Mark Drakeford is due to make his statement tomorrow after previously announcing that more restrictions could be lifted.

However, it is understood that is now not the case with cases again on the up in Wales.

Pupils in several schools have also been told to isolate after a number of covid cases were confirmed to be linked to gatherings.

Public Health Wales recorded 140 cases on Thursday, June 17, up from 49 recorded two weeks ago on June 3.

In his previous statement Mr Drakeford said he was looking to announce that up to six people could meet inside private properties from June 21.

Other changes expected included the re-opening of ice skating rinks and more people being allowed to attend indoor events.

Wales is now in Alert level one, the lowest of the Welsh Government’s Coronavirus control plan, and restrictions have already been relaxed to allow for outdoor gatherings.

Sports fans have also been welcomed back to stadia across the country as part of a series of test events.
