Aber celebrate 1000th game with win over Bluebirds

ABERYSTWYTH celebrated their 1000th JD Cymru Premier game with a win over Haverfordwest County at Park Avenue on Tuesday (Feb 1).

Over 800 were in attendance to watch Aber’s landmark game with those in attendance being let in for free.

Haverfordwest though had come with intentions of spoiling their party and after an even first half, where both sides had good chances to score, it remained goalless at the break.

There was an early second half chance for Sam Phillips but he pulled his shot wide of the goal.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Bluebirds brought on Corey Shephard and Alhagi Touray-Sisay in a bid to find the first goal.

Some fancy footwork from Franklin then got him away down the left but he was brought down by Ricky Watts, earning the Bluebird a yellow card and the hosts a free kick near the corner flag.

The free kick was floated to the back post but a foul gave the visitors a chance to clear.

On 64 minutes, a mistake at the back allowed Sam Phillips in and he slotted the ball under the arm of Lee Idzi and into the back of the net.

Following a few shaky moments after the goal the Bluebirds began looking for an equaliser but Watts fired a long range shot over the bar.

A cross into the box then caused panic as Sisay looked to bring the ball down but he couldn’t and Aber were able to clear.

On 72 minutes things went from bad to worse for the Bluebirds. Lee Idzi was penalised for bringing down Franklin as he looked to get on to a rebound and the referee poointed to the spot.

Henry Jones was then sent off for his protests and Matthew Jones buried the spot kick in the bottom corner to make it 2-0.

Sub Kieran Lewis then sent a long forward for Jordan Davies but he lifted his shot over the bar.

The Bluebirds ended the game on the front foot but they had nothing to show for it as Aber held on for a 2-0 win.

The two sides will do battle again in just over a week’s time as the Bluebirds welcome Aber to the Bridge Meadow on Friday, February 11.
