Betws bounce back with narrow win over Amman United

BETWS, playing their second match in four days, following a midweek loss at Llandeilo, bounced back superbly to earn a much-deserved victory at a windswept Cwmamman Park on Saturday (Apr 23).

With just a single win all season, the visitors still arrived in determined mood, but it was Amman who started the better.

However it has been a mixed bag for the Reds all season, with some good performances mixed in with some mediocre ones.

Scrum half Alex Williams was again bright, while Tom Thorneycroft, Rhys Phillips, Craig Ratcliff and George Clarke worked hard around the pitch, but Amman were making far too many unforced errors.

Betws soaked up early pressure, and soon counter attacked and with their first real sortie into Amman territory, lock Macaulay Collins crashed over for the opening try.

Full-back Dan Thomas, along with Cellan Ingram-Jones behind the scrum, and Jac Jenkins, Cellan Jenkins and Morgan Evans up front, put in a good shift for Betws, who increased their lead when number-eight and inflential captain Gareth Comley went over for a second on 20 minutes; outside half Josh Jewll converted.

Amman hit back when good pressure near the corner created their opening for Alex Williams to snipe over for the score.

Betws scrum-half Ryan Tancock continued his good season with another fine performance as the visitors went in at half time with the score at 10-5, but having played with a very strong wind behind them.

Amman lost Daniel James to injury before centre Tom Caddell reduced Betws’ lead with a penalty on 50 minutes, and he did it again on the hour to make it 11-10 as Betws began giving away some silly penalties.

Tryscorer Collins was replaced by Anthony Drew, and it was his pinched lineout ball that put his side onto the attack before replacement Justin Williams broke through for a third visitors’ try. Justin Williams’ conversion attempt hit the post, Jewell having been replaced just before.

Amman brought on Sean Cadell to bring on some much needed impetus and urgency, and Tom Caddell’s long range penalty brought United to within a point, but they were unable to further breach a disciplined Betws rearguard who held out for a deserved local-derby win.

So, Amman end a rather disappointing campaign with a defeat, but Betws soldier on and face Furnace United at home this Saturday (Apr 30).
