Bluebirds suffer first defeat of the season at Penybont

HAVERFORDWEST County suffered their first defeat of the season on tuesday night, as they were beaten 3-2 by Penybont at the SDM Glass Stadium.

Their win on Saturday over Airbus had taken them to the top of the JD Cymru Premier but the defeat sees them slip back to fifth place, whilst Penybont move above them into fourth.

The home side enjoyed plenty of possession early on without really troubling the Bluebirds goal.

However, on 15 minutes, Nathan Wood found Kane Owen and his low cross came to Rhys Kavanagh who took one touch to stop the ball before firing into the roof of the net.

The Bluebirds were only behind for two minutes though. A free kick from Ioan Evans was brilliantly saved by the home keeper, earning County a corner.

The corner from the right was headed down and Ben Fawcett was in the right place as he acrobatically flicked the ball into the net.

Haverfordwest were dealt a blow as Jazz Richards had to go off with an injury and he was replaced by Iori Humphreys.

Penybont were then forced into a change as well with goal scorer Rhys Kavanagh being replaced by Mael Davies.

Towards the end of the first half Haverfordwest enjoyed good possession but they were unable to create a chance.

Kai Whitmore then broke free in the box but his cross was blocked wide for a corner.

The half finished with the sides level at 1-1 with County perhaps the happier of the two.

Early in the second half Ryan George did well down the right and got a cross in but Jack Wilson saw his header saved.

From that, the Bont keeper played the ball upfield for Wood who pushed the ball on and his cross-come-shot was tapped in by Keyon Reffell.

Kai Whitmore then saw a shot blocked as Bont continued to look for more goals.

On the hour mark, Rhys Abbruzzese sent an inviting cross into the box for Wilson but he sent his header just wide.

With 20 minutes to go Penybont got their third goal of the game. Reffell won the ball and passed back for Ryan Reynolds whose cross took a deflection of Abbruzzese and looped into the net.

Wilson then saw a shot blocked wide as the Bluebirds looked for a way back into the game.

A long throw from Wilson almost paid off but although the ball went behind off a Bont defender the referee could not see and awarded a goal kick.

Nathan Wood then came close but his shot was well saved by Bluebirds keeper Zac Jones.

With three minutes to go Haverfordwest pulled a goal back as another long throw fell to Iori Humphreys who shot on the turn to score his first goal for the club and to make it 3-2.

They were unable to find a late leveller though as Penybont hung on for the win.

The Bluebirds are in action again on Saturday, September 3, as they host Newtown at the Ogi Bridge Meadow, kick off at 2:30pm.
