Blues earn excellent win

CWMAMMAN United came from behind to earn an excellent 4-2 win away to Afan Lido on Friday night (Feb 15).

What could be better than a Friday evening football match being played under lights on a decent surface with a healthy support in attendance.

This was the scene when the Blues of Cwmamman United stepped out onto the pitch at the Marston Stadium to take on Afan Lido in this Welsh League Division One fixture.

It was Cwmamman who kicked off and immediately showed their attacking intent and with only a few minutes played they did have the ball into the back of the home team’s net only for the effort to be chalked off due to an offside flag being raised.

For the Blues it was Collin Harris who was giving the home defence a torrid time with his twisting and turning and distribution of the ball. An early effort on goal was comfortably saved by Lido’s keeper McCreesh but the warning signs were clearly there for the home side.

Afan Lido were also lively in attack and the Cwm defence had to be on their toes to be first to the ball and quell any attempts on their goal.

However it was the home team who broke the deadlock when a defence splitting through ball was played to Lido forward Noah Daley who cleverly dinked the ball over the advancing Cwm Keeper Chris Curtis and beat the scrambling defence into the visitors net.

Cwmamman responded well to going a goal behind and again it was Colin Harris who lobbed the ball into the back of Lido’s net but again the effort was ruled out for offside.

It wasn’t long after that Cwm’s pacy attacker Ryan Hurlow was brought down in the box and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot.

Up stepped Cwm’s Collin Harris to take the spot kick but it was McCreesh who guessed the right way and got down low to his right to make the save.

Cwmamman continued to press forward with Ross Morgan the influential midfielder starting to gain dominance and eventually the ball was played to Collin Harris on the edge of the penalty box who fired a low shot which beat McCreesh and nestled into the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.

It was Lido who were relieved to hear the half time whistle as Cwmamman’s pacy football was causing problems for the home team.

The Second Half saw Lido bring on substitute Hartland who impacted almost immediately has he regained the ball from Cwm’s keeper’s parry to turn a cross and it was the unfortunate Cwm defender Nathan McNeil who in trying to clear the ball instead turned it into his own net.

For the second time in the game Cwm had to find a way to get back in the game. Cwm continued to play their attacking football and Cwm’s Ashley Curtis squeezed his shot from close range under the body of McCreesh only to see the ball cleared off the line.

However Curtis was not to be denied and eventually he got through the defence and lobbed the ball over McCreesh to score.

Cwmamman pushed on as they had the upper hand in this game. It was Cwm’s Ryan Thomas who showed real class in linking up with one twos with his fellow strikers on the edge of the box who finished the move as he stroked the ball into the home team’s net to give Cwm a deserved lead, 2-3.

Cwmamman continued to press and it was attacking Cwm midfielder Christian Allen who leaped to meet a cross only to see his effort hit the top of the crossbar.

Eventually Cwm pressure paid off and again it was the skill of the Thomas and Harris combination who carved open the home defence with precision passing leaving Thomas to slide rule his strike into the net and put this game to bed, 2-4.

A deserved win at the final whistle for Cwmamman which left the Players, Management and travelling support with plenty of smiles and proud of their winning performance.

Eirian Rees Manager will look forward to next Friday’s game (Feb 22) to another tough away encounter at Cambrian and Clydach.
