Bumper catches of cod at championships

bumper catchesTHE ANNUAL WELSH Cod (Boat) Championships fished out of Birkenhead on the River Mersey for the 10th year running on the weekend of November 23 and 24.

There were bumper catches of cod from the four boats used, though the average size was a bit on the small size. Over 250 were caught, measured and released over the two days, an average of over 10 cod per angler. The weather over the two days was great with hardly a breath of wind, not too cold when the sun came out.

After day one, Rod Adamson with 16 cod for 464 points held the way from another Welsh angler Jon Law, and they both fished off the same boat. Lying in third was EFSA England member Matt Osborne with 10 cod for 286 points only nine points ahead of another EFSA England angler and previous winner of the comp Barrie Senior.

In the end the first day’s first two placings were maintained with Rod Adamson increasing his lead over Jon to win by 895 points to 663, having caught an impressive further 15 cod to Jons eight.

Taking the Bonze pin, was another Rod Adamson, the son of the winner, and again his first pin. Rod senior also had the longest cod of the comp and longest on day two and also the longest on day one.

Thanks go to Phil for the organising, Stan Kucyj for helping with the bait, Ken Gainfort for taking the photos, Ken and Haydn Cole for sorting the bait, Rod for donating trophies, and some of the anglers for donating raffle prizes.
