BURTON’s Jonathan Venables finished not out on 30 as he helped his side frustrate Haverfordwest on Sunday (Apr 28).
Haverfordwest had posted 179-9 from their innings and looked set for victory with Chris Fitzpatrick (4-34) and Clive Tucker (3-22) both bowling well.
However, they could not remove Venables as Burton finished short of their victory target with two wickets in hand.
Town had made a slow start to their innings after being invited to bat as Mike Jones was bowled by James Davies in the seventh over for a score of four.
Simon Holliday and Lee Summons shared 30 runs for the second wicket as they looked to get their side going but Holliday was then caught by Richard Jones off the bowling of Morgan Scale on a score of 19.
Scale then trapped Danny Potter leg before as Town slipped to 47-3 in the 23rd over.
Summons and Ben Field then shared Town’s best partnership as they put on 78 runs for the fourth wicket.
Summons hit seven fours in his knock of 58 but he was then bowled by James Davies.
Ashley James was then also bowled by Dan Llewellyn as Town were reduced to 128-5.
Field then took over hitting four boundaries and five sixes in a knock of 74 from 66 balls. Llewellyn then bowled Field and three balls later he had Jake Merry caught by Toby Hayman.
Hayman then ran out Chris Fitzpatrick and Huw Scriven made six before he was caught by Llewellyn off the bowling of Davies as Town limped to 179-9.
Burton made a good start in their reply as Hayman and Richard Jones shared 53 runs for the first wicket inside the first 12 overs.
Tucker made the breakthrough for Town as he had Hayman trapped leg before on a score of 30 that included five boundaries.
Luke Hayman then joined Jones at the crease with the pair sharing another 31 runs.
Luke was then removed in similar fashion to Toby, this time off the bowling of Fitzpatrick.
Moments later he had his second wicket as he had Jones, who had scored 46 with four fours and a six, caught by Potter.
That left the home side on 85-3 but Morgan Scale and Jonathan Venables shared 39 runs for the fourth wicket as they looked to get their side back on track.
Scale hit a four and a six in his knock of 22 but he was then caught by Fitzpatrick off the bowling of Simon Holliday.
Fitzpatrick then had James Davies (4) caught by Mike Jones and Gareth Bevan (1) stumped by Jack Scriven.
Tucker also returned to trap Dan Ridge leg before and had Llewellyn caught by Scriven as the wheels on Burton’s victory charge began to fall off.
Venables remained not out on 30 with two boundaries but there wasn’t enough time left as Burton finished short on 152-8, meaning the game ended in a draw.
On Saturday (May 4), Burton travel to Neyland while Haverfordwest are away to Whitland.
