WALES is set to welcome its first-ever Hyrox event, a rapidly growing global fitness competition, with Cardiff’s Principality Stadium confirmed as the host venue. The three-day showcase will take place from 30th May, marking another milestone in the event’s worldwide expansion.
The Principality Stadium, which can accommodate up to 74,000 spectators, will serve as the venue for the internationally renowned ‘fitness racing’ competition. Hyrox has gained significant popularity since its inception and now attracts thousands of participants from around the globe.
A growing global phenomenon
Hyrox was founded in 2017 by Christian Toetzke and Olympic hockey gold medallist Moritz Fürste in Germany. The inaugural event saw 650 participants, but the competition has since grown exponentially, with an estimated 200,000 competitors worldwide.
The event has seen remarkable growth in the UK as well. When it first arrived in London in 2021, it attracted 552 competitors. Just two years later, that number had surged to around 24,000 participants across two races.
Hyrox’s global footprint continues to expand, with previous events hosted in cities including Malaga, Copenhagen, Shanghai, Cologne, Miami, and Bangkok. Glasgow is set to host its own Hyrox event on 12th March before the competition arrives in Cardiff.
What is Hyrox?
Hyrox describes itself as a sport that “combines both running and functional workout stations, where participants run 1km, followed by one functional workout station, repeated eight times.”
Each race is held indoors in large exhibition halls, creating an intense and immersive experience for competitors and spectators alike. The standardised format allows for global leaderboards, culminating in a World Championship event at the end of each season.
Competitors must complete eight rounds of a 1km run followed by a designated fitness exercise. These exercises include a 1km standing ski machine, a 50m sled push, an 80m burpee jump, kettlebell carries, and medicine ball throws against a wall.
Hyrox aims to cater to both elite athletes and everyday fitness enthusiasts looking to push their physical limits. The event’s structured format and accessible nature have helped it grow into a global fitness sensation.
As Cardiff gears up to host this thrilling competition, thousands of fitness enthusiasts from across the world are expected to descend on the Welsh capital, adding to the city’s reputation as a premier destination for major sporting events.
