THE LAST FEW weeks has seen team golf take centre stage at Carmarthen Golf Club.
In the Ping Mixed, Carmarthen played Tenby at Haverfordwest with the team consisting of Elin Jones & Alan Price winning 5 and 4, Gwenallt Jones & Julia Webb unfortunately losing and Ed Wheeler & Sue Convery won a tense match on the 18th; in the next round they face Langland Bay GC. Alan Price and Ed Wheeler also combined in the Daily Mail Foursome and defeated Garnant; they now await the draw for the next round.
The Tiger’s A claimed their second away win of the season at Trefloyne, an excellent 6-3 result has put them in a strong position in the league. The B’s travelled to Haverfordwest and in very difficult conditions home advantage proved to be critical and they lost 6-1, however captain Tim Harries and Gerald Vaughan had an outstanding 5&3 win thus continuing their unbeaten partnership for the season.
The two senior teams have played their next round games in the South Wales Senior Classic Cup Competition. The A’s travelled to Cilgwyn and came away with an excellent 2.5-0.5 win, Len Davies and Clive Thomas, Tim Harries and Rhodri Davies gaining wins and Mick Fenney and Tony Fairlamb a creditable half. Unfortunately the B’s succumbed at home to a very strong Machynys A side.
The Rabbits have also commenced their league matches and are reasonably happy with the start, a fine 5.5 – 1.5 win at home against Garnant was followed by a close 4-2 loss away at South Pembs.

On the home front Martin Dean followed his son’s earlier win in the Blenheim Cup by taking the Alun Griffiths Cup with a solid 69 nett. In the Tretower Cup Jamie Dean kept up his early season form with a 69 nett but was pipped by Clive Harrison with 67 nett.
The Knight’s played for the P.C. Evans Cup where Martin Phillips defeated Carwyn Evans on count back, both players coming in with 42 points. In the Bill Naylon the winner was Peter Jones with 37 points, one ahead of Bob Bateman and Elwyn Morgan.
In the first of the club’s Open Days – the mixed open – three couples came in with 39 points, but on count back the winners were Carl Evans and Rebecca Robinson, second were Nick and Jane Ingram and in third place Stewart Evans and Eleanor Goodman.
Further open dates include in July – 5th Senior Open, 21st Ladies Open, 23rd Texas Scramble Open and on the 30th the Men’s Open day – for further details see Carmarthen G.C. website.
