Clayton seals Premier League spot with Masters win

Will compete in the Premier League of Darts after his Masters win

PONTYBEREM’s Jonny Clayton secured the final place in the Premier League of Darts after he won the Masters final on Sunday evening.
Clayton had beaten former World Champion Michael Van Gerwen in the semi-finals on Saturday while his opponent in the final, Mervyn King, had seen off current World Champion Gerwyn Price.
Both had played some excellent darts over the weekend and it set up an intriguing final.
With nine Premier League players already announced, the Masters final became a shoot-out for the tenth place.
Clayton’s came out on top with an 11-8 triumph, seeing him progress to complete the field for the prestigious event.
The Welshman had appeared in the 2020 Premier League, but only as a challenger in Cardiff where he played Michael Smith.
He will now get the chance to show what he can do against more of the world’s best including Van Gerwen, Price, Gary Anderson, Peter Wright and Rob Cross.
The Premier League season is scheduled to commence around Easter after being delayed from the traditional February start.
Jonny took to Twitter after the match to share his feelings. “Absolutely over the moon, lost for words, never felt so good. 31 years of hard work has paid off. Thank you to everyone who has supported me from the start, family, friends, work colleagues, sponsors everyone and I mean everyone”, he said.
