Commoners cruise into next round of Welsh Cup

ABERYSTWYTH UNIVERSITY COMMONERS cruised into the third round of the Welsh Cup on Sunday (Jun 27) as they beat Pembroke by eight wickets.

Pembroke won the toss and elected to bat at Treleet but they struggled and were eventually bowled out for 113.

The home side were in trouble early on as Bill Somerfield claimed the wicket of Luke Butler before Mustafa Ahmed trapped Paul White leg before wicket.

That left Pembroke on 3-2 and it soon became 17-3 as Ahmed had Jonathan Rogers caught.

Charlie Perkins and Jamie Kaijaks shared 29 runs for the fourth wicket but the Commoners struck again when Faysal Shahzad bowled Perkins on a score of 14 to leave the home side n 47-4.

Jack Harries came in and also scored 14 before also falling to the bowling of Shahzad.

Ian Lawton bowled Aaron O’Neill and he then also trapped Kaijaks leg before on a score of 18 as Pembroke slipped into further trouble on 76-7.

There was a late wicket for Chris Ward while Ahmed picked up his third wicket of the day.

Sam Davies hit three four in a score of 23 but he was bowled by Umar Aslam as Pembroke’s innings came to a close.

Pembroke looked for early wickets as the Commoners began their reply and that is exactly what they got.

Robert Smythe had Bill Somerfield caught by Charlie Perkins before Aaron O’Neill had Ian Lawton caught by Paul White.

That was as good as it got though for the Pembrokeshire League Division 2 side.

Arshad Sher hit seven fours and a six in his score of 44 while Ravi Mander was unlucky not to reach his half century as he finished unbeaten on 49.

That saw the Commoners home having earlier been left on 9-2.
