Cresselly win Division 1 title on final day

CRESSELLY claimed the Division 1 title on Saturday (Aug 20) as they beat Narberth by seven wickets.

Going into the game, Cresselly were 17 points ahead of nearest challengers Llangwm and knew they just needed a couple of bonus points to ensure their first title since 2011.

Narberth won the toss and chose to bat but they were bowled out for 140.

Cresselly took three early wickets to leave Narberth in trouble but Jamie McCormack batted well as he scored 48.

Tom Murphy was the pick of the bowlers for Cresselly with figures of 3-26. Nick Cope also took three wickets.

In reply, Davy Johns took two wickets for Narberth but it wasn’t enough to stop the champions-elect.

Phil Williams scored 46 and Matthew Morgan added 48 as Cresselly cruised to their target.

Cresselly have finished as runners up on a number of occasions in previous seasons but they were able to celebrate on Saturday night.

They have won 12 of their 18 games, losing just twice, and win the league by 18 points.

Cresselly captain Iwan Izzard told the Herald: “I feel honoured to have firstly captained such a great club, and been part of a strong team. From when I was a young kid being coached by Dai Cherry, I always dreamt of just captaining the first team, so being able to win some silverware and lift the league trophy is extra special.

“We had a couple of really close games this season, and at certain points of those games it really could have gone either way, but the fighting spirit of the team really showed and that’s credit to the boys.

“We had a few weeks this season where we had boys away for one reason or another, but always had quality players stepping in to play and the lads were always willing and supportive.

“We are already looking forward to next season, where we can hopefully defend our title, and try to add more silverware in the form of cup competitions.”
