Davies nominated for Welsh Sports Personality of the year

SCARLETS player and former Dyffryn Taf pupil, Jonathan Davies, has been nominated for the Welsh Sports Personality of the year for 2017.

Davies has had an excellent year, not only with the Scarlets, but also with the British and Irish Lions, and was voted player of series by his Lions teammates.

The Centre helped the Lions to a historic draw in New Zealand and played every minute of the three tests.

He was also instrumental in helping the Scarlets to win the 2016/17 Pro12 campaign, and he scored one of their six tries in their 46-22 win over Munster in the final at the end of May.

Davies was also part of the Wales Six Nations squad earlier in the year but despite scoring a try in the first game, he could not help his team to finish any higher than fifth place in the table.

Sadly for the Scarlets, Davies recently suffered a serious foot injury which will keep him out of action for six months.

He returned to the region in 2015 and has so far made 129 appearances, scoring 195 points in those games.

Fox, as he is also known from the pub (Fox and Hounds) that his parents ran in Bancyfelin, is up against five other excellent opponents for the award.

The first of those is Gareth Bale who has helped Real Madrid to a Champions League and La Liga double so far this year.

Elinor Barker is another name on the list as the Cyclist became a World and European Champion in 2017.

Para Athlete Aled Sion Davies is also in the running having won two gold medals at the World Championships in London, also setting a new world record in the F42 Shot put event.

Natalie Powell, a judoka, has also been nominated after a successful year which saw her top the world rankings, the first British female to do so.

The final name on the list is cyclist Geraint Thomas who this year became the first Welshman to lead the Tour De France and wear the prestigious Yellow jersey.

Voting will open on Monday, November 27, at 8am and will close at 6pm on Saturday, December 2, and you can vote by phone or online.

The winner will then be announced at a ceremony to be held at the Celtic Manor Resort on Monday, December 4.
