Cardiff City announce Steve Morison contract extension

Cardiff City manager Steve Morison has signed a contract extension as first team manager until summer 2023.

The news comes after the Bluebirds’ 1-0 victory over Derby County last night, earning a vital 3 points.

After taking control in November, Morison has hugely improved Cardiff’s form and performances – following a rough start to the season.

They’ve now moved 16 points from the relegation zone after winning four of their last eight games.

Cardiff were just 2 points from relegation when Mick McCarthy was sacked in October 2021.

The Welshman was originally signed until the end of the 2021-22 season.

The full statement reads:

“Having drastically improved the team’s performances since initially taking interim control in November, the Board of Directors are confident in Steve’s ability to continue this development built around a progressive and clearly identifiable playing style.

“Ahead of today’s announcement, Tan Sri Vincent Tan said: “I’ve been very pleased with the way Steve has improved our style of play and has helped get the best out of our younger and more established players.

“Steve deserves this opportunity following the hard work that he has put into driving the players forward on and off the field.

“I am confident that he is the right person to build a competitive squad over the summer months and I look forward to our continued, honest and positive working relationship.”

“Speaking to cardiffcityfc.co.uk, Steve said: I’d like to thank Tan Sri Vincent and the Board for showing this faith in me to take us into the summer and next season.

“I’m very proud to be Cardiff City Manager and to have been given this opportunity to continue the work that we’ve started.

“The remit is clear: it’s my job to ensure we finish this season in the strongest possible way before we rebuild our squad with some fresh faces in the summer and further develop our younger players ahead of the new season.

“I can’t wait for the challenge ahead.”
