HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY kept up their hopes of a top six finish as they beat Newtown 3-0 on Saturday (Mar 27).

The Bluebirds remain in seventh place following the win, three points behind fifth and sixth placed Penybont and Caernarfon Town.

Haverfordwest travel to Penybont in their last game of the first phase next Saturday in a crucial game for both sides.

Newtown had the first chance of the game with a free kick into the box but the ball evaded everyone and went out for a goal kick.

The hosts went close again on 14 minutes as Mwandwe’s cross was tipped onto the crossbar before the follow up was volleyed wide.

Midway through the first half some good football from the Bluebirds saw them cross into the box for Kieran Lewis who fired wide.

Lewis’ radar may have been off then but a minute later he found the net to give the Bluebirds a 1-0 lead.

Corey Shephard played a beautiful pass through to Cameron Keetch, who cut the ball back for Lewis and the midfielder shot low into the net.

Shortly after the half hour mark, Shephard spotted the Newtown keeper off his line and volleyed towards goal but he was unlucky to see his shot fall just over the bar onto the top of the net.

Newtown then had a chance to level the game but a shot was blocked by Scott Tancock.

With four minutes to go until half time, Mwandwe shot towards goal but Matthew Turner made a great save to keep the Bluebirds ahead.

The visitors were on the front foot at the start of the second but a cross from Keetch was just too far in front of Danny Williams.

Seven minutes later, Jazz Richards crossed for Lewis but he sent his header just wide of the goal.

Newtown then came close with a header from a corner but two minutes later the Bluebirds doubled their lead in spectacular fashion.

Kieran Lewis lobbed the ball over the Newtown defence to Shephard, who laid the ball on to an onrushing Keetch who rifled the ball into the top corner.

With just under twenty minutes to go, the ball fell to Nick Rushton but he dragged his shot wide as the hosts continued to look for a way back into the game.

Ben Fawcett came close for Haverfordwest but he sent his shot over whilst under pressure from McAllister.

The points were made safe with a minute left on the clock as Shephard played an excellent ball over the top for Marcus Griffiths to chase and the striker rounded the keeper and slotted the ball in to make it 3-0.

In injury time, Mwandwe saw a shot deflected into the hands of Turner and the Bluebirds saw the game out.
