NEWTOWN moved out of the bottom two of the JD Cymru Premier on Tuesday night (Mar 2) as they beat Penybont 2-0 at Latham Park.

It was the first game played since a rise in coronavirus cases forced the league to be suspended in December 2020.

Penybont made a good start and were close to scoring the first goal when Mael Davies whipped a ball into the box but Ben Ahmun couldn’t quite get on the end of it.

A minute later though, the home side were awarded a penalty following a foul by Bont’s Matthew Harris.

Tyrone Ofori took the penalty but Bont keeper Ashley Morris made an excellent save to keep the scores level.

On Sixteen minutes, Jordan Evans crossed into the box for Ofori who headed in to give his side the lead and to make amends for his penalty miss.

The visitors looked to respond almost immediately but after Kane Owen found Ahmun in the box, he couldn’t get a shot away and home side cleared.

Newtown looked to add to their lead but were unable to find the net as Morris made a number of good saves to keep the score at 1-0.

That was the way it stayed until half time as both sides continued to battle for what would be the all-important second goal of the game.

It was the Robins who started well in the second half as they saw a header go wide before appeals for a penalty were waved away.

However, on the hour mark it was the home side who got the second goal of the game as a ball into the box was headed in by James Davies.

Five minutes later, a cross from Mael Davies was cleared for a Bont corner as they began to put pressure on the Newtown goal.

With twenty minutes to go another corner fell to Nathan Wood but his shot was blocked.

The Bont continued to work hard as Kosta Georgievsky charged down a clearance from the Newtown keeper but ball went out for a goal kick.

Newtown were able to hold on though for an important win which lifts them up to ninth place in the table.

Penybont remain in sixth place but on Saturday, March 6, they travel to Flint Town United who now occupy the second relegation spot.

Newtown will look to add to their win but face a tough task against second placed Connah’s Quay Nomads.
