Swansea must take more risks in attack – coach Matt Gill

Matt Gill has said Swansea fans’ patience will pay off over time as he admits that the club must take more risks in attack.

The Swansea coach stated this after Swansea’s 1-0 defeat to Blackpool on the weekend.

The team had just one shot on target in 90 minutes, despite boasting 71% possession.

The club has scored the 6th least goals in the Championship this season, but Gill said this can improve.

“I think we all recognise we need to be a little bit more proactive in the final third.

“We probably arrive in the final third more in more control and in good team structure than anyone in the league.”

“It’s about control for us. We want to control as much of the game as we can. It’s a very random game so the more you control it the better,” he told BBC Sport Wales.

“Now it is about us adding that final bit. I don’t think you can work the other way and concentrate on finishing when you don’t know how you will arrive there.”

Swansea reached successive play-off spots in the 19/20 and 20/21 seasons under manager Steve Cooper.

However, times have changed and the side currently sits 16th in the league under Russell Martin – who works with a significantly lesser budget following the end of the Premier League parachute payments.

Gill said: “It’s a different club now to what it has been previously, and we do have to do things slightly differently.

“That’s why their [fans’] patience and support has been so welcomed.

“The support we have had since we arrived has been outstanding.

“That can take you a long way. That patience will hopefully get rewarded over time.

“He’s [Martin] made it obvious to everyone, that’s [Premier League] where he wants to go with this club.”

Swansea now look forward to their away fixture against Peterborough, taking place tomorrow at 19:45.
