Swansea Signs Muslim Charter with Millwall and Luton

Championship teams Millwall, Luton Town, and Swansea City have committed to “actively supporting players” of the Muslim faith by signing the Muslim Athlete Charter.

The charter has now been signed by more than one-third of the 92 professional clubs.

Millwall has stated that seven players in their academy follow the Muslim faith, and by signing the charter, the club aims to promote “inclusivity” and create an environment where these players have the chance to “flourish.”

Steve Kavanagh, Lions CEO, said: “It is imperative the club incorporates the differing needs of our Muslim players.”

He also said: “As a club we are striving to create an environment where players and staff can maximise their ability and talent and this will help those of Muslim faith to do exactly that.”

Luton CEO Gary Sweet said: “We are an all-inclusive club situated in one of the most multi-cultural and ethnically diverse towns in the country. As a club we are proud to represent Luton on a national level.

“That diversity is reflected not only in our playing squad, but also with staff working for the club on a daily and match-day basis.”

According to James Chiffi, Swansea’s Head of Wellbeing and Development, the club expressed they were “honoured” in making a commitment.

“A human-first approach is something we strive for,” he said. “The faith and cultural needs of all stakeholders form an integral part of that.”

Over 70 professional clubs and organisations in Britain have signed the charter since its launch by Nujum Sports in June 2021.

The organisation has expanded its reach beyond Britain and is now offering its services to the Netherlands Football Association (KNVB), as well as providing support to Eredivisie players such as Feyenoord’s captain and Turkish national, Orkun Kokcu, and PSV Eindhoven’s winger, Anwar El Ghazi.

Nujum CEO Ebadur Rahman told BBC Sport: “Our strategic objectives for this coming year will take our work internationally, with some key partners in Europe, starting with the KNVB.”
